In the past, Bluetooth was mainly used to connect wireless headsets and speakers to mobile phones. With continuous advances in Bluetooth technology it has now found a whole range of new applications, especially in the low power sensor market.

Bluetooth Low energy (BLE)

Bluetooth low energy is a feature of Bluetooth 4.0 wireless radio technology, aimed at new, low-power and low-latency, applications for wireless devices within a short range (up to 50 metres).

Applications

Due to BLEs exceptionally low energy consumption, it is possible to make peripheral devices that run of coin cell batteries for many years. This facilitates a wide range of applications and smaller form factor devices in the healthcare, fitness, security and home entertainment industries. It is possible to have sensors such as thermometers operating continuously, and intermittently communicating with other devices like a mobile phone.
